Early Life

Paul Hudson is a homegrown Michigander and longtime resident of West Michigan. Born in 1982, he grew up in Metro Detroit, where his father worked for Chrysler while his mother worked nights as a doctor in the ER. He was one of six children, four brothers and one sister. Paul is the grandson of Michigan State’s College Football Hall of Famer, Duffy Daugherty, who was a pioneer of racially integrating college football and won two national championships with the Spartans.

After high school, Paul attended Cornell where he played catcher for the baseball team. Soon after, he graduated Cum Laude from Georgetown Law and then served as a law clerk for the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Career

Following his time in the Federal Court System, Paul went on to become a senior partner at Michigan’s oldest and most prominent law firm, Miller Canfield, and serves as the firm’s Chair of Appeals. He has argued hundreds of appeals in state and federal courts across the country, including cases defending law enforcement officers and upholding constitutional rights.

In 2016, Paul was awarded the Golden Gavel which "...exemplifies significant contribution to professionalism and courtesy in the practice of law and [promotes] the image and honorable reputation of the profession" and a legal expert stated "...one name is coming out on top: Paul Hudson.” Most recently, Paul was nominated by the Republican Party as a candidate for the Michigan Supreme Court.

In his free time, Paul coaches his son’s baseball team and is an avid marathoner. Paul resides in East Grand Rapids with his wife Jen and two children, Sarah, and John.

Policy Platform

As a pragmatic and principled Republican, my focus is on finding common-sense solutions in a time when humanity seems to have lost its mind. Our country is fractured, divided, and headed in the wrong direction because our leaders have stopped leading.

America is the shining city on a hill: it's time we start acting like it. No more nonsense.

My policy platform is simple, because we need a GPS to get us back on track.

A long-term vision focused on regaining our self-sufficiency, talent development, and protecting American businesses will unleash broad-based prosperity that will improve the quality of life for all and create a sustainable future for our children.

SECURITY

Our American way of life is not possible without a commitment to security, both at home and abroad: Strong national defense, steely-eyed leadership on the world stage, and steady enforcement of the law in our cities & on the border.

On Friday, a young West Michigan woman’s life was brutally cut short by an illegal immigrant who was only in this community because of multiple failures in our broken immigration system. What this tragedy highlights are the serious policy failures that need immediate changes to prevent anything like this from happening again. My full statement:

ENDORSEMENT ALERT- @senjonbumstead backs Hudson in Third District House Race Receiving Senator Bumstead’s endorsement means a great deal to me personally, and to my campaign. Jon Bumstead’s work in both chambers of Michigan’s state legislature is that of a dedicated public servant. The Senator’s leadership, especially in fiscal policy and natural resource protection, is truly impressive and instructive to all who seek to serve.

The Wall Street Journal referred to President Biden's $7.3 trillion budget as a ‘budget fantasy’ that 'sets a record for unreality'. The proposed federal budget spends trillions more than the nation can afford, hikes up taxes, and skimps on vital priorities like national security. This $1.1 trillion spending only adds further to our existing $34 trillion national debt. This budget has our nation’s priorities all wrong, and I call on @repscholten, to oppose this reckless plan. In a campaign ad last cycle, she implored: ‘Democrats, stop the spending.’ Now is her chance to back up campaign rhetoric with actual action in Congress by opposing President Biden’s irresponsible budget.

To most people, the term ‘bipartisan’ means a style of constructive engagement with the other political party and a genuine interest in working cooperatively. But politicians like @repscholten use this term to camouflage their real ideology. The independent non-profit Common Ground Committee rates all members of Congress on bipartisanship. Despite all of Rep. Scholten’s political posturing, she falls in the ‘below average’ category according to their review, with a score of just 17 out of 100. Last week, I had the honor of touring the @PresGeraldRFord Museum with @ACC_National. We stand on the shoulders of giants and it is our responsibility to repay the enormous debt of gratitude to those who fought to keep our Republic, like President Ford. That means we expect our elected officials to make the tough decisions in the face of opposition and speak honestly, even when the truth hurts. We were given an excellent example in President Ford and it’s our job to uphold the legacy he built for West Michigan and the nation. I’ll leave you with my favorite quote from President Ford: “We are bound together by the most powerful of all ties, our fervent love for freedom and independence, which knows no homeland but the human heart.”

Today’s horrific attacks on Israel are a reminder that the world won’t wait for us to get our act together. Political stunts this week paralyzed Congress and left us unable to respond to a true crisis on the world stage. I join the voices expressing support for Israel and its people. Now we need to back up words with action, and we need Congress to get back to serious work to make it happen.

Politicians in DC say we’re divided. But since I announced, voters in West Michigan seem quite unified on one thing: disgust and disappointment with our leadership in Washington, DC. Barring a miracle, the government is about to shut down completely and we’re going to hear the same old thing we always do with politicians blaming everyone else. It’s everyone’s fault except their own. Enough man, people are tired of it. The only solution now is to get better people in there to do the job.

Met with voters last night to hear about various community efforts around West Michigan. This region is made up of community leaders like those at @616Service, working to expand local volunteer corps for non-profits.

Attended the @GRChamber Breakfast with Legislators today. The topic of discussion was something we know well: Growth West Michigan has been the fastest growing region in the state of Michigan for over a decade because of public/private partnerships exhibited at events like this. Great hearing from elected officials @SenRogerVictory, @MarkEHuizenga, @deboernancy, @hoodforthehouse, @caglanville, @JohnforMI and Grand Rapids leaders like @AndyTJohnston. A community that holds open dialogue and shares ideas is one that is more effective and successful.

It was a great week here in West Michigan! I enjoyed visiting a small manufacturer in Muskegon, attending ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, and talking with voters throughout the district about the issues that matter in #MI03.

Really enjoyed visiting Swanson Pickle and learning more about the wonderful (and tasty) art of pickle production! Michigan is the nation’s leading pickling cucumber producer and these farmers are the backbone of our community here in MI-03.
